Objective

Agriculture is the backbone of the livelihood security system of the State because nearly sixty per cent of the population still relies on Agriculture as their primary source of sustenance. The high proportion of workforce in agriculture is due to the fact that the non-agricultural activities have not able to absorb the rapidly growing population of the State. At the same time, the share of agriculture sector in Gross State Domestic Product is declining.

Agriculture in Odisha still depends on the small and marginal farmers as small and marginal farmers constitute more than 90% of the farming community. Hence, the growth in Agriculture Sector is crucial for poverty alleviation and for enhancing.

The District Malkangiri has total cultivated land is about 1,42,740,Ha. constitutes about 24.65 percentage of the total geographical area of 5,79,100 Ha. The net area sown is about 23.83 percentage of the geographical area. Despite several hurdles like frequent occurrence of the natural calamities with erratic monsoon and uneven distribution of rainfall, agricultural production has been increasing.

The rich natural resource endowment with prevalent diversified agro-climatic conditions of the District suitable for a wide variety of crops offers immense scope for agricultural growth. The climate of the District is tropical, characterized by high temperature, high humidity, medium to high rainfall and mild winters. The normal annual rainfall is 1667.60 mm distributed over 79 rainy days. South-West monsoon contributes about 81.2% of annual rainfall in 53-57 days during the month of June to September. The maximum annual temperature ranges from 300 c to 440 c and minimum annual temperature range from 150 c to 270 c of the district. From the physiological point on view the district is coming under South Eastern Ghat. Agro-Climatic Zone.

Activity Report & Programme From 2012-18

Directorate of Agriculture provides a host of extension services and carries out a number of crop-specific programmes. The activities are taken up under the State Plan Schemes and Centrally Sponsored Scheme like National Food Security Mission (NFSM) Rice , Pulse, National Mission of Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), National Mission on Oilseed and Oil Palm (NMOOP) and National Mission on Agriculture Extension and Technology (NAMET). The NAMET will comprise of four Sub Mission namely Sub Mission on Agriculture Extension (SAME) , Sub- Mission on Seed and Planting Materials (SMSP), Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM), and submission on Plant Protection and Plant Quarantine (SMPP) catering to various development intervention required. Besides, many of the agricultural activities are also being taken up under the Centrally Assisted Programmes like Rashstriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

Types Of Crops Cultivated:

Kharif Crops:-

Paddy(HYV/Hybrid/Local), Maize (HYV/Local), Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, Millets, Arhar, Moong, Biri, Other Pulses, Groundnut, Sesamum, Castor, Niger, Mesta, Sweet Potato, Other Vegetables, Chilli, Ginger, Turmeric.

Rabi Crops:-

Wheat, Maize, Gram, Biri, Kulthi, Field Pea, Cowpea, Groundnut, Sesamum, Mustard, Sunflower, Potato, Onion, Other Vegetables, Chilli, Garlic, Corrander, Sugarcane.

Summer Crops:-

Paddy(HYV/Hybrid),Mung.

Soil Structure:

No variation in soil in diffrent parts of the district has been observed.The soil throughout the district is Red, Lateritic and Black type.Soil is mostly neutral to acidic in nature throughout the district. Available of Phosphrous and Potash are high in nature where as except Malkangiri block the Nitrogen status in the entire block is medium where as low in Malkangiri.The block wise soil reaction and fertility status is indicated in the following table.
